“For awhile it used to be that food was all you could eat, today there are thousands of other edible foodlike substances in the supermarket. These novel products of food science often come in packages elaborately festooned with health claims, which brings me to another, somewhat counterintuitive, piece of advice: If you are concerned about your health, you should probably avoid products that make health claims. Why? Because a health claim on a food product is a strong indication it is not really food, and food is what you want to eat.” “That food and eating stand in need of a defense might seem counterintuitive at a time when ‘overnutrition’ is emerging as a more serious threat to public health than undernutrition. But I contend that most of what we’re consuming today is no longer, strictly speaking, food at all, and how we’re consuming it – in the car, in front of the TV, and, increasingly, alone – is not really eating, at least not in the sense that civilization has long understood the term.” A friend left In Defense of Food, an Eater’s Manifesto by Michael Pollan in my locker at work a few months ago and having just [...]

I guess I’m filing this under “creative” because I’m making something? Anyway – looked all over for a widget to display my top iTunes songs, artists or genres and although there were two listed in the WordPress plugin search panel, I could get neither to work. So I’ve dusted off my rusty coding skills and learned how to make a basic widget and pull up some info from the iTunes Music Library. I’m not experienced at all with PHP or XML so it’s been a learning experience so far. Many thanks to the developers of the iTunes XML Parser for PHP, it’s just what I needed! I’ve still got a long way to go – you can see the app in the lower left hand sidebar of this page. Currently I’m displaying play count, track id and genre. Clearly I have duplicate records listed and I’m trying unsuccessfully to filter out some genres (Data and Audiobook) but both are small problems I should be able to fix pretty quickly. The next step will be to add some options to the plugin that can be manipulated through the admin panel – number of songs, type of data to display, and a [...]

I’ve had my new desktop PC up and running for about two weeks now. And though I was furious that my too-expensive HP Pavilion (not the exact model) died after two years, I was also struck by the irony that I had purchased the laptop with the cash I received when I sold my ex-wife’s engagement ring after two years of marriage. All water under the bridge I suppose. There was some fault with the motherboard which, thankfully, left my data intact. I have been out of the technology scene for about two years, however and wasn’t sure what I was going to do to replace the computer. But old habits die hard and after a few days mulling over my options I built out a desktop with only a few (if expensive) missteps that is seriously sweet and has tons of hobbyist options for the geek in me. For what?Clearly I was going to get something – so the question I always put to my friends seeking advice I applied to myself: What are you going to use it for? In my case I do only a few things on the computer. I’m no longer developing, running virtual servers [...]

Two years ago, in May 2008, I posted “Last Day in IT.” It seems amazing to me that it’s only been two years – I’ve gone through so many changes. A friend of mine asked me how it’s been, these past two years and how it compares to IT. I have to say, I haven’t made a mistake. Moving into Nursing has been the best change I could have made for myself. Let’s start with the things I miss: I miss the very cool and eclectic geeks that I used to work with. There are fewer USB Missile Launchers these days and no one is taping my belongings to the ceiling anymore. There are no two hour lunches at the local bookshop – though these were out of desperation as I tried to escape the office life and there are no rousing discussions of the benefits of wired versus wireless keyboards when online gaming. In short, what I miss most about IT are the anti-hip, weird and brilliant folks I used to work with. Granted, there are plenty of brilliant nurses, both weird and not so weird but generally we are either far too busy or far too exhausted to [...]

Zen Buddhist elders nearly prevented Abbot Loori’s ordination as a monk, after seeing a tattoo peeking from his robe. A Navy souvenir, it depicted an innocent-enough anchor, but Japanese associate tattoos with criminals, and Abbot Loori refused to erase his past. The ordination finally went ahead. But the abbot wore a bandage over the tattoo when he visited Japan, Newsday reported in 2004. “I think they were a bit puzzled when I returned year after year and the burn still hadn’t healed,” he said. New York Times Obit for Daido Roshi As I wrote in my reflection on my experience of meeting Daido Roshi for the first time, I noticed his tattoo right away and it reminded me of my father’s own tattoo, the same arm, the same location – though instead of Loori’s anchor, my father had a cross with his name on it. Still, both were faded with time, not much more than a indistinguishable blueness against sun-roughened skin. In my father’s case, he received his when he was just 16, at a carnival and tried unsuccessfully to hide it from his parents. Loori, I imagine, received his while serving in the Navy. My father’s clearly marked himself [...]

I received a card today that informed me that the abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery had passed away. You can find more information about this interesting man on the pages set up in tribute to him by the Mountain and Rivers Order. I did not know him well but I did have the opportunity to sit with him and listen to his dharma teachings. What I do remember of him was that his teaching seemed effortless, spontaneous and authentic. In very few words he cut quickly to the heart of things. When I first visited Zen Mountain Monastery, I was looking for some serious peace of mind – my father had just passed a few months previously, my wife had left me a year before that and I was two months shy of a radical career change from software development to nursing. It was in this crazy, mixed-up state of mind that I first walked into the old church that serves as the meeting hall and zendo of this order. The first weekend Daido spoke to us and although I don’t recall everything he said, I remember looking at the navy tattoo on his arm and thinking how it reminded [...]
