House Sold!

I don’t know how many others have had this interesting surprise when selling their home but as I’m, as they say, “in medias res” I thought I would share this somewhat surprising, somewhat annoying and somewhat scary situation.

Back in August I put my house on the market and in three days had an offer at the asking price – great, right?

Well, my agent told me to relax, a lot of things had to happen first and I shouldn’t bother to find new housing just yet – there would have to be an assessment first, then a commitment letter and several other legalities before anyone was allowed to move anywhere.

Well being the kinda guy I am I half-ignored his advice. I went and found housing, placing a security down and explaining that I wouldn’t likely move in until the middle of September or possibly around October 1st. It was nice to have the time to slowly look over various living options and finally choosing the one that matched my goals the closest.

I had my sisters stop by and pick out things that they wanted as I’m getting rid of most of the stuff in the house. However, since I’m still living there, no one has taken much of anything yet.

Then, yesterday (Thursday) I receive frantic calls from my lawyer and my agent telling me that everything is in place and I’ll have to vacate the premises on Tuesday or possibly Thursday of next week! I was like “what???”

When I get home, yep, there’s a letter letting me know.

Had I waited on my agent I wouldn’t have a place to lay my head next week. As it is, I have to rush around over the next several days and divest myself of my property with head-spinning efficiency. Just how this is all going to work out, I’ve no idea.

Never mind that I’m in class, a final is coming up and oh – I have a job.

On the other hand, had I gotten rid of everything ahead of time and the deal didn’t close, well that would stink too.

Well, I’ve done what I can do. I just called my lawyer and am trying to negotiate a bit of an extension (until the 1st) so I have time to get my stuff out and make sure Zoe also has a healthy and comfortable place to live as we are, unfortunately, separating company after a year or living together.
